  2.                   Hypermedia - What is it?

  5. Hypermedia is a  way  of  presenting  information, graphics,
  6. text,  sound  samples  and   animation,  altogether  in  one
  7. program. It was  first  "invented"  on  the  Apple  Mac by a
  8. program called Hypercard which  is  still very famous today.
  9. This program allows you to  display information very simply.
  10. Let's say you want a contents  page where if people click on
  11. a subject, they will be  moved  onto  that subject. And then
  12. when they're  on  that  subject,  they  can  click  on other
  13. things which will then  display  graphics, sound samples and
  14. animations, and perhaps even  more  text.  Well  all this is
  15. possible thanks to  Hypercard  on  the  Apple  Mac, but what
  16. about on the ST?

  18. Well, it's also possible, thanks to the PD market. There are
  19. four programs  which  can  be  split  into  two  categories;
  20. Hypertext and Hypermultimedia. Hypertext  systems are mainly
  21. involved   in    displaying    text    information,    while
  22. Hypermultimedia systems are designed for  all sorts of jobs;
  23. playing samples, playing  animations,  viewing  pictures and
  24. showing text.

  26. The two Hypertext systems are  called  First Guide and Hype.
  27. They are both  brilliant  for  showing  text information and
  28. they can show graphics and  sounds,  but  not as well as the
  29. other programs. In fact  they'd  be  brilliant  as a text or
  30. reference  type  book.  Unfortunately,  1st  Guide's  manual
  31. doesn't have an English manual.

  33. The  other   two   Hyper-Multimedia   systems   are   called
  34. Connections and HyperBase. Connections  is very, very simple
  35. to use but only works in  high res, while HyperBase works in
  36. medium resolution and is  a  little  harder  to get to grips
  37. with; but  not  by  much!  They  are  both  more graphically
  38. inclined, their  text  handling  isn't  as  good  as  on the
  39. Hypertext systems. It would be best to choose these programs
  40. if you want to  show  off  graphics,  or play samples, along
  41. with a description of some sort.

  43. Then comes the commercial package,  Hyperlink. This is based
  44. on the Apple  Mac's  program,  Hypercard.  Because  of this,
  45. Hyperlink can display and handle  dBase  files which are now
  46. very standard. Hyperlink  can  display practically anything,
  47. and if you really want to get into hypermedia then Hyperlink
  48. is the ultimate choice.

  50. Unfortunately, the amount of  information  that can be shown
  51. is limited to the amount of  space  on  a floppy - or if you
  52. don't want to distribute  your  work,  your  hard drive. Now
  53. floppy disks on the ST  can  only  display  720k of info and
  54. after deducting 200k for the  program you're left with 520k.
  55. Graphics files take up about 32k  each, and samples can take
  56. up around 100k for eight  seconds. You've guessed it; you're
  57. not going to be able to fit  a  lot on there. The Falcon can
  58. fit twice the amount on  its  floppies because they are high
  59. density, but still there is not enough room. Floptical disks
  60. are a good idea, as  are  magneto-opticals, but these aren't
  61. standard. So what else is  there?  CD-ROM  of course. Yes, I
  62. know you can't write to it,  but  already  on the PC you are
  63. getting things like "The  Encyclopaedia  of  Animals" on CD-
  64. ROM for as little as  £29.99.  Imagine  - you might even see
  65. Atari Update on CD one day;  or the glossies. Of course, the
  66. ST will be long gone then.....
